Disadvantaged families have had a turbulent time over the past decade. Benefit cuts, the rising cost of living and reductions in support services have made life harder for families struggling to make ends meet and provide the best start for children.
As spending on children’s services has risen in response to increased demand for support, the pressure on local authorities to cut non-statutory services such as family support has only intensified.
In light of local authorities’ financial challenges, much of the new investment in family support has come from central government initiatives such as the Supporting Families and Start for Life programmes.
Supporting Families funds much of the early help delivered by councils, and this is set to be built on by the handful of areas trialing new approaches to family support that have emerged from the Care Review.
