In July, the government announced Social Work England would take over regulation of the social work profession from the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) on 2 December. The government announced plans to create a new independent social work regulator in 2016, and last year Social Work England was established to prepare the ground for taking over regulatory duties. In September 2018, Colum Conway joined as chief executive from the Northern Ireland Social Care Council, which he had led for five years.

What is the role of Social Work England?

Ultimately, our role is to protect the public through the regulation and registration of the social work profession. We also have responsibilities around raising standards so the profession continues to improve.
