School admission codes revised

Kirsten Anderson, legal research and policy manager at Coram Children's Legal Centre, looks at whether proposed new regulations promote better access to education for vulnerable children

The Department for Education last month published revised School Admissions Regulations. The regulations, developed following consultation on the school admissions framework earlier this year, are designed to simplify and create a less prescriptive school admissions procedure.

These reforms are indeed timely: the current admissions legal framework is overly complex and repetitive. Reforms are necessary to ensure that they are clearer and help to ensure that school admission arrangements are fair, lawful and respond to the unique circumstances and vulnerabilities of each child. The revised draft guidelines will apply to schools and academies in the 2013/14 and subsequent academic years.
