SUMMARY

An alliance of eight west London local authorities introduced a development programme for frontline child protection social workers in response to endemic recruitment and retention problems in social work. Searle and Patent's research set out to evaluate the effect of this training programme on individuals and employers.

The initiative aimed to reduce turnover and promote recruitment by creating a more wide-ranging career progression for social workers through two 12-day development programmes focused on team managers and experienced social workers. Team leader modules included effective supervision and leadership, and managing care planning, while advanced social workers could specialise in one of three areas: advanced child protection, domestic violence and mental health.
