
Amid wider plans to increase revenue for the NHS, the Department of Health has been stepping up efforts to recover costs of NHS care from migrants and overseas visitors. As part of this, the Visitor and Migrant NHS Cost Recovery Programme conducted a consultation in early 2016 on proposals to extend charging to areas of healthcare currently free to all overseas visitors. The government's response to this consultation last month confirmed that most NHS services will eventually be charged-for at point of use through a staged approach from April 2017. Such changes are likely to negatively impact on children and families who are undocumented migrants, deterring marginalised and vulnerable groups from seeking healthcare.
