What do you do?
I help develop foreign language modules for primary and secondary schools. It's part of Arsenal Football Club's Double Club, which links curriculum topics to football. The programme provides resources for a series of 90-minute language lessons, split into two halves of 45 minutes. The first half is classroom learning, and in the second pupils use the language during a training session with Arsenal coaches.
How did you get into this role?
The role started in September and is part-funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF). I was a language teacher, so I know that it can be difficult to make children see the importance of learning a language. In secondary schools languages are no longer compulsory, so the number of pupils has dropped significantly: in 2000, 83 per cent of pupils studied languages, compared with 48 per cent currently. I also worked in football media.
