Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) launched a new framework for inspecting local provision for children and young people with special education needs and disabilities (SEND) towards the end of 2022 with the first inspections taking place this year.

The framework promises more emphasis on the experiences of children with SEND and their families. It also features new “engagement meetings” between Ofsted, the CQC and local partners to take stock of progress between inspections.

There are three new inspection outcomes. Areas can be judged to have arrangements that typically lead to positive experiences and outcomes for children with SEND; arrangements that lead to inconsistent experiences with improvements needed; or widespread and/or systemic failings that lead to significant concerns about children's experiences and outcomes.
