The impact of leaders on social work practice is one of the core areas examined – and judged – as part of Ofsted’s Inspection of Local Authority Children Services (ILACS) regime.
Inspection data collated by the Association of Directors of Children’s Services (ADCS) shows that at the end of January this year, nearly 60 per cent of children’s services departments with published inspection reports were rated “good” or “outstanding” for leadership.
Meanwhile, 30 per cent were rated “requires improvement” for leadership and 11 per cent – 23 councils – were judged “inadequate”.
ILACS guidance – which was updated in February this year – sets out what inspectors are looking for from leaders including the director of children’s services (DCS), council chief executive and lead member for children’s services.
