By John Simmonds, director of policy, research and development, CoramBAAF
Forty years ago, I was a member of the social work department at Goldsmiths College, University of London, working with colleagues to develop an advanced course in children and family social work. We drew heavily on the work and materials of the British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF), now CoramBAAF, and we went on to establish a leading and well-respected social work course initially delivered at three sites and then nationwide.
Fast forward and we are now celebrating the 40th anniversary of CoramBAAF. The organisation, and particularly its flagship Adoption & Fostering journal, has played a significant part in the development of what we know, understand and do. As we look back on the achievements of the last 40 years, this is also an opportunity to reflect on and learn from what the system has not done so well. With a review of the care system on the horizon, this opportunity for reflection could not be more timely.
