Advice on... Parental alcoholism

2 mins read Health Youth Work
Children of alcohol-dependent parents often try to cover up a parent's drinking, but behind closed doors it can have an impact on nearly all areas of their lives. Marie-Claire Fitzpatrick explains how young people are affected.

Q. How many young people are affected by parental alcoholism?

It is estimated that there are nearly a million children in the UK who are currently living with an alcohol-dependent parent, often with devastating effects for the young person. Research indicates that familial alcoholism can adversely affect all areas of a child's life, including their education, and can result in behavioural problems and compulsive disorders.

Research suggests that domestic violence is six times more common when parents suffer from alcoholism and, although some children of alcohol- dependent parents might not experience obvious forms of abuse, they often suffer from neglect and miss out on the little things in life that are crucial to their wellbeing. Many of these children are living in fear, trying to hide their problems from the outside world.
