Youth schemes must cater for a variety of interests

I've been reading about the Mayor of London's Fund for Young Musicians. On the face of it, giving talented but impoverished young people this chance is a wonderful idea, and they and their parents report that it is life-changing.

But... we don't need a scheme for 100 musicians a year - we need schemes for all children - with a variety of foci, not just music, so that every child has the chance to take part in something worthwhile.

Music is good, though, because it is social, rewards practice with competence, and results in public performance, which can be a major cause of celebration.
