For many years I was Youth Policy Adviser at the Financial Services Authority (FSA) later the Money Advice Service (MAS). Together with Fairbridge and Citizens Advice we developed training and resources for those working with vulnerable young people and over the course of the Young People and Money programme we trained more than 15,000 youth practitioners.
Last year I was invited to write up the inquiry held by the All Party Parliamentary Group for Financial Education, exploring the Financial Education needs of vulnerable young people. The issue of supporting young people to manage their money continues to be a concern and the more we can equip youth workers and others working with young people to do so, the better.
For that reason the Money Advice Service has asked those involved in developing and delivering Young People and Money, to produce a new good practice guide and toolkit to include recent research and the experience of the Young People and Money programme.
So this is an invitation to you, and anyone else with experience of working with young people on money issues, to get in touch.
We are looking for case studies, what have you done with young people and what has been the impact? Have you been able to embed financial capability into your work with young people, if so how? Do you have examples of exercises and ideas you have used and found effective? All contributions will be acknowledged. So please, if you have something to share that you think would support others with this vital task of helping young people manage their money effectively, do get in touch.
