3.8 million children in the UK live in poverty after housing costs. It seems strange to welcome this, but an improvement in the lives of 100,000 children no longer living below the poverty line is a notable achievement and should be celebrated.
However, far too many children are still being denied a life free from poverty. The figures published today by the Department for Work and Pensions make it clear that progress towards ending child poverty by 2020 remains manifestly too slow. With 29% of UK children still experiencing the challenges and deprivations that are a daily reality of living below the poverty line, and a worryingly upwards trend in persistent poverty, it becomes obvious why a comprehensive, collective and credible child poverty strategy is essential for improving the lives and futures of children in the UK.
