
The level of children missing school has become a “stubborn and damaging issue”, according to the chief inspector of Ofsted, England's schools regulator.
This line of enquiry completely misses the point and diverts us from the real truth: that we are systematically dimming our children’s lights and leaving them stumbling in the dark.
When a child spends prolonged periods of time feeling bored, apathetic, scared and alone they become what I call, 'lights off'. They disconnect from learning, their mental health suffers and they stop believing in themselves. Their thoughts cascade them into despair, apathy and despondency, asking themselves: "Why bother? No-one cares anyway."
