Volunteer support is vital to children’s progress

Recent research released by the School Cuts coalition shows that 76% of primary schools will not be able to afford their costs next year.

This affects the amount of one-to-one support pupils receive in schools; something that is vital to ensure children who are falling behind can access the school curriculum and have the tools for greater success.

Bookmark Reading Charity was founded in 2018 and exists to change children’s life stories through the joy of reading. Our mission is simple: we want every child to read. According to Pro Bono Economics, it is estimated that 7.1 million adults across the United Kingdom have very poor literacy skills. This cycle needs to be broken, and this is why we partner with primary schools in disadvantaged communities to promote whole-school reading cultures. We’re focused on being part of the solution and driving real change. With ten programmes now available to schools, we’re on track to reach half a million children benefitting from our work by July 2027.
