Those who knew me when working in local authorities will know that I was and am a pedant – a stickler for correct English and clear communication. I have been bemoaning the poor state of technical literacy among local authority officers and civil servants for many years. That isn’t to say that I was always perfect in this regard; like many of us, self-criticism is a learned art – and an art that is not always learned.
As a columnist for Children & Young People Now I have had to learn new skills, and to please new audiences – Ravi does not let anything by, be it an ambiguity or a poor construction, or, heaven forfend, a semi-colon. And writing reports for a Lead Member is one thing but writing 360 words for a column is a different challenge!
