The care system is failing vulnerable young people

Care Leavers Week, from the 25th to the 31st of October, is a chance to reflect on the ways in which we can work to improve the lives of care leavers.

At the moment, we are failing children in the care system on a multitude of fronts, leading to poorer life outcomes for care leavers compared to the rest of the non-care experienced population. As a report released by children's rights campaign, Hope Instead of Handcuffs, earlier this year found, young people who are care experienced are more likely than their peers to enter the criminal justice system, more likely to become homeless and, in the years after they leave school, less likely to be in further education, employment or training. Children in the care system are also more at risk of experiencing poor mental health and often suffer from mental health issues which are more severe or complex.
