Supporting children struggling with the return to school

For some children, going to school, even in normal times, can be worrying, upsetting and even quite scary.

Now, after months of lockdown, school closures and homeschooling, and with the Covid-19 pandemic still raging, some children and their families are finding the thought of being back in the classroom downright terrifying.

Although schools began to welcome their pupils back in September, with the second half of term about to start many children are still finding being in school difficult. And some haven’t returned at all, with the Department for Education reporting overall attendance in state-funded schools is still just 89 per cent.

We know the pandemic has ravaged families. Lockdown has taken its toll in many ways, impacting health and livelihoods across the country and as much as parents try to shield children from the difficulties the pandemic has wrought anxieties are often absorbed by osmosis.
