I was a strong supporter of bringing the inspection of children's social care together with schools under the Ofsted umbrella.Integration didn't work out quite as easily as all that, and there are still too few inspectors with experience across the field. But a knee-jerk reponse to split Ofsted is misguided. As Christine Gilbert says, the management structure is much less important than the quality of inspection. The danger is that there will be two years or more of introspective restructuring with inspection losing focus in the meantime.
