No child should be excluded from school

Schools need to understand the reasons behind a child’s behaviour to help stop those at greater risk of exclusion slipping through the cracks.

We are often told that the best place for our children’s education is in school, but at the same time, we are also facing record levels of exclusions. 

I’ve worked in the education sector for 30 years and I don’t believe that any child should be excluded from school. The impact of exclusions is huge, not just on the children, but on the school and the local authority as well.

Government statistics show that, in the autumn term 2023/24, there were 346,279 suspensions in English schools, almost 40% more than the previous period, and 4,168 permanent exclusions - a 34% increase. The most common reason for both suspensions and permanent exclusions was persistent disruptive behaviour.
