Making Snowmen

I have just finished an obscure tome called Soviet Short Stories which I bought when I believed I would learn more Russian than "my brother is an engineer" and "where is Moscow please?".

There was a seasonally appropriate story called Making Snowmen by Yuri Nagibin, and I thought the early years and education workers out there might like this extract. The children have been making snowmen (obviously) and one of them whose father died in a mining accident (we assume) has shown a surly dedication to the task and produced a powerful sculpture of a miner (well, this is a Soviet story).
