He is the former disgraced minister jailed for perjury, I know. But in my eyes, he's actually a bit of an inspiration. And I'd never have imagined I'd be ever saying that a few years ago. Jonathan Aitken, the politician who famously "lied and lied and lied" this week released his report Locked Up Potential on reforming the prison system to better rehabilitate offenders, for the Centre for Social Justice think tank run by IDS.
He says prison governors should be paid bonuses for reducing reoffending and he puts forward a range of measures that aim to give former prisoners a second chance to better their lives upon release. As he says, he hasn't suddenly gone soft on crime but wants the system to make a concerted effort to actually rehabilitate people so that they don't reoffend.
