I welcome the cuts

Whether you believe this country's economic problems are the fault of the bankers or an overbloated state, it's clear that today's young people should not be expected to pick up the tab for the mistakes of their parents and grandparents, especially when they will already be faced with overcoming the twin challenges of climate change and our ageing population in the decades ahead.

The Chancellor's recognition of this fundamental principle is therefore welcome.  However, he needs to be vigilant that some of the cost saving measures he plans to introduce, such as the withdrawal of the education maintenance allowance and changes to housing benefit, do not cause a disproportionate impact on young people when so many of them are already suffering from the effects of the recession, particularly in the job market.
