How the new 10-year health plan should address children and young people’s mental health needs

A new NHS 10-year plan will be published in spring 2025, outlining the government’s long-term ambitions and priorities for the health service.

It will focus on three shifts that are intended to better meet the needs of the UK’s population, including:

This presents a golden opportunity to implement changes to transform the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people. And change is urgently needed.

Right now, one in five children and young people in England has a probable mental health disorder, and the number of children and young people in contact with mental health services has more than doubled since 2018.

As outlined in our Thinking Differently manifesto, we want to close this gap in children and young people’s mental health through a renewed focus on prevention and early intervention.
