Local authorities have a statutory duty to provide free school transport to children up to the age of sixteen. But with a further 7.1% set to be shaved off public spending by 2015, this is just one area that is under the spotlight in the continuing drive to improve efficiency and cut costs.
Results of a survey carried out by Campaign for Better Transport have revealed that around three-quarters of councils are cutting their school transport budgets and more than half are either reviewing or cutting back on their post-16 transport costs.
The challenge for authorities is ensuring that they make the savings they need to, while still fulfilling their obligations to children and families. Some councils have been particularly innovative in their approach to tackling this issue - achieving some great results along the way.
