Entrepreneurship and the DWP

One of my colleagues bumped into a bidwriter for a fellow organisation at a DWP briefing on social enterprise.  He asked a question at the briefing: “If you have got social enterprises who are developing their own projects and they are putting a lot of time and effort into developing a product or service, would you fund that, if the person was self-employed?”  They weren’t sure of the answer, which was slightly alarming.  If the DWP is trying to set up social enterprises they should understand the landscape a bit better than they seem to.  Broadly the initiative has gone down very well in the sector, though.  It’s been received as a very impressive turnaround for the government after a wake-up call on entrepreneurship in the press.
