Education is far too important for ‘fag-packet’ policies

Universal Infant Free School Meals  – or "UIFSM" as it is known in the Department for Education – is not only an acronym I have no idea how to pronounce, but a policy that illuminates the problems of coalition government with its needs for all parties to have successes.?? The provision of universal free school meals is, in many ways, a brilliant principle. The stigma of free school meals will be ended and there will be less social segregation. Children will have more nutritious lunches, learn better eating habits and grow up more healthily. What's not to like??? Well, on this occasion, Dominic Cummings has got it right – it is a dumb idea dreamt up on the back of a fag packet. The logistical problems are obvious when you start to think about the realities – expanding food provision at short notice is no easy task.
