Disabled children in poverty

1 min read

‘Contact a Family’, a UK-wide charity providing advice, information and support to the parents of disabled children, has carried out some important research on families with disabled children. Just think for a few seconds on what a disabled child would mean, or does mean, for you.

A survey was undertaken with more than 2,000 families with a disabled child. The research shows that for those families who are in jobs:

one in seven (14 per cent) are missing meals
one in six (17 per cent) cannot afford to heat their homes.

For those who can’t work because they are caring for a disabled child:

almost a quarter (24 per cent) are going without food
a third (32 per cent) without heating.

This is deeply disturbing, and I support the ‘Contact a Family’ campaign to provide more help to these families.
