Every now and then I find that I have a disconnect with reality, where my understanding of the way the world works is just so fundamentally out of tune with what is actually happening that I can only survive by taking a large glass of Macallan into a darkened room and consuming it very slowly but steadily. I feel like that whenever I remember that Latin is more valuable in the English Baccalaureate than technology, for example.

But this week has proved the most baffling yet. Of course I agree with Michael Gove that in term-time children should be in school not on a cheap package holiday to Majorca. But the proposed approaches to managing the problem defy belief.
