Peer Power Youth was commissioned by NHS England to co-produce guidance for children and young people's mental health provider collaboratives on commissioning inpatient mental health services with young people and their families.

The project focused on ethical co-production, in partnership with young people with lived experience of support services, to shape service design and decision-making processes meaningfully.

Charity Peer Power Youth worked alongside young people to co-produce three key outcomes:

We engaged young people aged 16 to 25 with lived experience across justice, health, and social care systems, including secure settings. This process was co-designed by young people and carried out in partnership with NHS Executive commissioners, professionals and stakeholders.

Young people explored 12 key principles for ethical and effective youth engagement in commissioning.

Young people stressed that all decisions affecting them must involve their input, captured in the phrase: “Nothing about me, without me.” Transparency on projects should include being upfront about budget and logistical limitations, as honesty is highly valued.
