Young people boost resilience and confidence through Shakespeare

2 mins read Participation
Participating in a theatre production has boosted the confidence and prospects of a group of vulnerable young people.

On 26-28 August, 14 members of Coram's Young People Programmes, supported by the Queen's Trust, will feature in a production of Shakespeare's Pericles at the National Theatre's Olivier Stage. Pericles marks the start of the National's new Public Acts initiative, fostering community through theatre and the arts. Public Acts was inspired by Public Works, the Public Theatre's programme of participatory theatre in New York.

I will be so proud and inspired to see the young people we support express themselves, embodying their characters with confidence and conviction to the crowded theatre and achieve something they never thought was possible.

At Coram we are privileged to support many young people in our programmes, including adoptees and those with care experience, young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds and young parents. Offering a space away from home and separate from children's services, these workshops, rehearsals and finally the performance create a real sense of coming together, achievement and celebration.
