In 2016, HeadStart Kernow, part of Cornwall Council, received a £10m, six-year grant to support the mental wellbeing of children and young people in a variety of ways, writes Tracy Bowers, workforce development lead, HeadStart Kernow.

A central feature of the programme was to develop the workforce, and HeadStart Kernow was able to introduce a range of training for professionals, mostly but not exclusively from the education sector. We engaged with various providers including the Thrive Approach, Trauma-Informed Schools and Trauma Recovery Model.

A rolling programme of training in Cornwall began with a 10-day training programme with some core components including attachment theory, the neuroscience that helps to explain and understand a child's behaviour; the importance of play and creativity – with a focus on Dr Dan Hughes' model of PACE: Play, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy – and incorporating research on adverse childhood experiences.
