Sports project PeacePlayers aims to unite young people from Catholic and Protestant communities in Belfast.

PeacePlayers International Northern Ireland

PURPOSE

To unite, educate and inspire young people from Catholic and Protestant communities through sport

FUNDING

Annual running costs of around £300,000, from funders including the Northern Ireland Executive, Community Relations Council, Comic Relief, Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, the Irish Government's Reconciliation Fund, the American Ireland Fund and Belfast Council

BACKGROUND

PeacePlayers was started in Northern Ireland in 2002 by American brothers and basketball players Brendan and Sean Tuohey. "Basketball's a neutral sport here; it hasn't been claimed by either community," explains PeacePlayers Northern Ireland managing director Gareth Harper. "These guys saw a great opportunity to bring kids together through basketball." So far the programme has engaged more than 20,000 young people, including 2,200 last year.
