How signing aids hearing children's speech

Scheme uses sign language to improve vocabulary in hearing children to help them to develop communication, numeracy and social skills.

PROJECT
Sign 4 Little Talkers

PURPOSE
To boost communication and other skills among two- to four-year-olds

FUNDING
£9,151 from April 2016 to March 2017 from Luton Council's Flying Start strategy, for delivery in eight settings. An intensive programme, available in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, costs £1,380 per setting. Two hours of staff training, available nationally, costs £331.50 per setting, plus travel costs

BACKGROUND
Sign 4 Little Talkers is part of Sign 4 Learning, a suite of courses using British Sign Language to increase vocabulary in hearing children, helping with everyday communication, numeracy and social skills.

Sign 4 Learning was developed in 2010 for Luton Council by its early years consultant Susan Thomas, who found children were failing to reach developmental milestones at the end of reception because they lacked the vocabulary necessary to show their understanding.
