Project
Down Syndrome Training and Support Service
Purpose
To enable children with Down syndrome to reach their potential
Funding
£72,000 a year from the Big Lottery Fund
Background
Wendy Uttley's son Sam was born with Down syndrome in 1997. She was struck by the lack of support available in Bradford and the "dire" lack of knowledge and understanding of Down syndrome among teachers, which forced her to educate Sam at home for several months when he was seven. "Many people don't recognise Down syndrome as a specific learning need," says Uttley, a qualified maths teacher, who went on to set up a dedicated organisation to improve support and education.
