Objectives: Fishing can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Mo Ball, community development worker at Halton Brook Children's Centre in Runcorn, came up with the idea of a fishing club to engage parents and older children who use children's centre services. The aim was to give young people at risk of social exclusion something positive to do and the chance to learn new practical and social skills.
What was done: Halton Children's Centre Fishing Club was established in early 2007. It is for all children's centres in Halton and young people are referred by family support and childcare teams and charity Action for Children. Organisers take up to 20 seven- to 19-year-olds out fishing after school during the summer months and on weekly fishing trips during school holidays.
