Charities such as Daybreak and Family Rights Group have been at the forefront of delivering family group conferences (FGCs) to vulnerable families for nearly three decades.
These family-led decision-making processes bring together a child’s family, friends and community network to put a safe welfare plan together as an alternative to care proceedings.
Despite a growing evidence base that supports the effectiveness of FGCs in reducing the number of children entering care, there still needs to be a push to embed FGCs within all local authorities as part of statutory pathway planning and service offer, says Karen Brown, Daybreak’s chief operating officer.
"Government funding can dictate whether or not there are appropriate resources to provide an FGC service within local authorities, or delivered by an outsourced third sector provider, but where FGCs are embedded, they can make a real difference to children and young people’s life’s and are cost effective,” explains Brown.
