PROJECT

The Kaleidoscope Programme

FUNDING

From £650 for consultancy days to £10,000 for a five-day course for up to 10 staff

BACKGROUND

The Kaleidoscope Programme was devised by Milton Keynes primary school deputy head Anne Kaye in 2001 after she was tasked with improving the attainment of underperforming year 6 pupils. Inspired by "colour therapy" - a form of complementary therapy that uses light and colour to enhance physical and mental wellbeing - the seven-step programme is designed to boost children's self-esteem and resilience. Kaye went on to train other schools in the approach, including Water Hall Primary School in Milton Keynes.

ACTION

At Water Hall, all children from nursery upwards start the day with a 20-minute session featuring dimmed lights and relaxing music. Kaye says this reduces stress and gets children "in the zone for learning".
