Project
Barclays Money Skills Champions
Purpose
To help young people manage their money more effectively and help others to do the same
Funding
£5m from Barclays for three-year project
Background
In 2010, Barclays invited youth organisations to put forward proposals for projects to improve young people's ability to manage money. The National Youth Agency (NYA) joined forces with fellow youth organisations Rathbone, UK Youth, Youth Access and YouthNet to design a project using peer mentoring – an approach already shown to be successful in tackling uncomfortable subjects such as substance misuse and mental health. "We know young people rely very much on each other for such subjects, rather than seeking information elsewhere," explains Barclays Money Skills Champions programme manager Diane Evans.
