Care leaver scheme brings council and providers closer

A collaboration between organisations in the public, private and charitable sectors is delivering a Staying Close pilot for young people in West London transitioning from care to independent living.
The Staying Close pilot is co-produced alongside care leavers as much as possible, helping to keep the focus on young people and how they can be involved in developing the service

ACTION

This government-funded scheme helps young people leaving residential care to live near to, and keep links with, their children’s homes (see below).

With funding from the Department for Education’s Children’s Social Care Innovation programme, the West London pilot began in 2017 after a partnership was formed between Ealing Council and children’s charity St Christopher’s Fellowship.

At the time, the local authority was running one children’s home and St Christopher’s had two homes of its own included in the scheme.

However, after Ealing closed its residential setting, the partnership was expanded to include a neighbouring local authority, Hounslow, which brought another children’s home into the arrangement.
