Air Cadets helps boost the leadership, teamwork and citizenship skills of young people.

Project: Tower Hamlets Air Cadets

Purpose: To boost the leadership, teamwork and citizenship skills of 13- to 20-year-olds

Funding: Cadets each pay £25 a quarter plus fundraising generates between £5,000 and £9,000 a year for core running costs

Background: In early 2010, a shortage of volunteers meant there was no longer an air cadet organisation covering the east London borough of Tower Hamlets. Flight Lieutenant Rex Nicholls and others from the nearby Shoreditch air cadet squadron were keen to revive the organisation and the riots of August 2011"acted like a catalyst". "There was a need to explore the reasons and how communities could respond and rebuild," he recalls. "The government had been considering expanding the cadets movement so this was an opportunity to fill a big hole in our coverage of London and extend the opportunities we offer to young people."
