Youth work reforms need universal focus

Youth charter and qualifications review can revitalise youth work, but experts call for a broad approach.

A government pledge to develop a youth charter to strengthen and co-ordinate national youth policy has been widely welcomed by youth work leaders.

The charter announcement - made alongside a commitment to undertake a review of youth work qualifications (see expert view) - aims to boost young people's voice on their priority issues, including violence and knife crime, mental wellbeing and climate change.

The charter will be developed alongside the sector and young people over the coming months, and some youth work experts have called for it to take a broad view of the role of youth workers and the support they provide.
