Welsh success fuels call for school counselling

A partnership of education, mental health and community organisations aims to intensify calls for every child in England to have access to school-based counselling.

Teaching union the NASUWT and community organising group Citizens UK have recently put their weight behind the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy’s (BACP) long-running campaign for the government to fund statutory counselling services in every primary and secondary school in England.

The three organisations say that the roll-out of school-based counselling could ensure children and young adults get access to support at a time when needs are rising – NHS data shows that one in six children have a diagnosable mental health condition.
