Lockdown widens digital divide

Campaigners call for improvements in national scheme to provide care leavers with digital equipment.

The Covid-19 pandemic is exposing the digital divide experienced by many care leavers, with campaigners warning that it is harming vulnerable young people’s ability to maintain education and job-seeking, and access health and social care services.

Despite the government’s digital connectivity scheme, which has seen 700,000 laptops and tablets delivered to schools to support disadvantaged children and young people since last March, the lack of any standards governing what local authorities should provide has meant some care leavers still do not have access to devices or data.

It appears there is recognition within the Department for Education that more needs to be done to help care leavers with digital connectivity.
