Lockdown response: how services deliver vital support for children

Early years, education and youth work services are working hard to ensure children and young people can access learning and support amid the pandemic, but sector leaders worry financial pressures could lead to closures.

As the new year dawned and cases of Covid-19 surged across England, leaders of services for children again prepared themselves for the imposition of national lockdown restrictions, the third in less than a year in response to the pandemic.

The closure of schools on 5 January to all but children of key workers and those with an education, health and care plan (EHCP) signalled a shift back to online learning for millions of pupils. Meanwhile, the closure of public play and leisure facilities and the introduction of strict rules over outdoor exercise and meeting people outside family bubbles further reduced children’s ability to go out and socialise with friends.
