Analysis of data from Cheshire West and Chester Council has found rising levels of pupil absence and use of exclusion by schools in the first term after lockdown restrictions ended last year.
The findings indicate a surge in behaviour problems among pupils struggling to cope during the pandemic – the number of pupils who received a first-time fixed-term exclusion (FTE) in Cheshire West and Chester schools rose to 93 from 62 the year before. The proportion of first-time FTEs issued accounted for 54 per cent of all FTEs, up from around 40 per cent previously (see graphics).
