Latest analysis by the YMCA shows that between April 2022 and March 2023 there was a slight uptick in council spending on youth services, and the number of youth centres open and youth workers employed compared with the previous 12 months.

The annual analysis explores trends in spending, provision and workforce in England and Wales in the most recent 12-month period and how this compares with previous years going back to 2010/11 (see graphics).

It uses section 251 outturn datasets submitted by local authorities covering spending on youth services and then converts these into real-terms costings to make them comparable with 2022/23. The financial and cost differences were then analysed at a national and regional level.
