
The Education Policy Institute's (EPI) recent report, Unexplained Pupil Exits from School, found that one in 10 children who finished their GCSEs in 2017 experienced "exits" at some point during their time at secondary school that "cannot be accounted for".
In all, there were 69,000 unexplained exits by more than 61,000 pupils that year - around a tenth more than the nine per cent reported in 2014 - with the EPI report breaking this down by local authority so that areas with the highest and lowest rates can be identified (see box).
The institute found that close to a third of those who experienced an unexplained exit were current or former looked-after children; a quarter had been identified with mental health needs; a fifth were current or former children in need of help and protection; and one in six had been identified with special educational needs or disabilities.
