
The start of the academic year saw the launch of a new government drive to improve attendance levels of school pupils.
Whereas previous measures have been punitive in nature – for example, fines for parents for children’s unauthorised absence from school and strict behaviour management guidelines – the Department for Education’s latest package focuses on using data to identify attendance problems earlier so that targeted intensive support can be put in place.
The DfE says a renewed focus is needed after the pandemic saw school attendances drop. It points to government research that shows that pupils with the highest school attendance gain higher GCSE and A-level results.
