Extending 30 hours of government funded early education to disadvantaged three- and four-year-olds would have benefits for their development with few drawbacks, according to latest analysis carried out for the Sutton Trust.
The findings, exclusively revealed by CYP Now, strengthens the arguments for offering more government-funded childcare to pre-school children from disadvantaged backgrounds as a way of boosting child development and ultimately improving social mobility, say researchers (see expert view).
Under existing government policy, all three- and four-year-olds are entitled to 15 hours of early education per week for 38 weeks of the year, with “working families”, meeting certain criteria, being entitled to 30 hours per week over the same time period.
